Regulatory Use of XBRL

Regulators around the world use XBRL for their filing requirements. Oneof the first was the SEC in the United States. Now most regulators require it.


XBRL in Government

XBRL is used in government around the world. Much of the use is in the area of Standardized Business Reporting (SBR) where the government uses XBRL to communicate with its citizens and vice versa. Costs of filing are substantially reduced as a result.

XBRL is also used by government as part of its open data policies. While this is not widespread as yet, the scopeof open data programs is rapidly increasing.

Corporate Actions

Corporate actions includes events like dividends, stock splits, mergers, rights, options etc. Such actions are announced by companies through news releases, prospectuses, regulatory filings and more frequently lately, social media, particularly Twitter.
